Why you should switch to low-energy LEDs

With energy bills on the rise, and inflation causing significant increases to the cost of living, many of us are looking for ways to save and reduce our outgoings. Energy bills take up a significant part of the average person’s monthly spend, so it makes sense to focus on ways on how you can reduce your property’s energy consumption.

One of the best ways to lower your energy consumption is to replace the standard light bulbs in your property with LEDs.  In this guide, we’ll provide you with everything you need to know about LED lights, including how they work, their main benefits and their different types.

What is an LED?

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are highly efficient forms of lighting which act as a semiconductor device, emitting light when an electric current passes through it. LEDs are 90% more energy efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs, thus offering powerful lighting without using an excessive amount of energy.

How do LEDs work?

LED diodes work when an electrical current passes through a microchip and the particles which transport the current (electrons and holes) combine together. This illuminates the LED lights and produces highly efficient visible light. In order to prevent issues with performance, the heat emitted by LEDs gets absorbed into a heat sink.

For domestic and commercial purposes, LEDs are incorporated into light bulbs and light fixtures for a range of different lighting applications. They are also available in a range of different lighting colours, such as your typical white light, plus hues such as red, blue and green. Thus, LED diodes offer a breadth of design opportunities.

What are the benefits of LEDs?

There are plenty of benefits of installing LEDs into your property. According to research conducted by the Energy Saving Trust, lighting accounts for around 11% of the average UK household’s electricity usage, so switching to a more low-energy form of lighting can have a significant impact on your household and finances. Here are some of the main advantages of LEDs:

1. Can reduce energy costs

LEDs are 90% more efficient than traditional light bulbs, this means that they use less energy to provide effective lighting. By consuming less energy, LED lights can help to lower your energy bills and help you save. As stated by the Energy Saving Trust, you could save up to £55* a year on your energy bills by replacing all the bulbs in your home with LED lights.

2. Eco-friendly

As LED diodes use a low amount of energy, they have great benefits for the environment. So, they are an ideal choice for those looking to reduce their carbon footprint. It has been reported that if you replace all of your property’s bulbs with LED lights, you could lower your carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40kg per year.

3. Long-lasting

This is another key benefit of LED light bulbs. So, how long do LEDs last? Low-energy light-emitting diodes can have lifespans of up to 50,000 hours, with some LEDs boasting the ability of providing effective lighting for up to 20 years! This means that once you replace your existing light bulbs with LEDs, you won’t have to worry about replacing them for quite some time, offering you peace of mind and a great opportunity to save on purchase costs.

4. A vast range of design and product options available

Last but not least, another excellent benefit of LED lights is the diverse range of products available for you to purchase. Examples include LED strip lights, LED ceiling lights, everyday LED light bulbs, as well as products for specific locations such as LED lights for bedroom and kitchen spaces. You can therefore reap the many benefits of LEDs in all your spaces, whether outdoors or indoors.

** Top tip – LEDs are notoriously useful for gardens and spaces that accommodate plants as they can help with their growth. There are a range of LED grow lights available for purchase.
