How do fluorescent light starters work?
Fluorescent starters work by supplying a high voltage to the gas inside the fluorescent tube. The gas inside the tube ignites, causing the bulb to glow. Without the starter, the fluorescent light would be unable to function.
What is the difference between a fluorescent tube starter and a ballast?
Both a fluorescent starter and a ballast are essential for fluorescent lights to work. A fluorescent tube provides the initial high voltage to ignite the gas inside the tube and emit light. However, a ballast regulates the current that flows through the lamp to ensure a constant, flicker-free light output.
Fluorescent starters are usually located in or near the ballast which typically looks like small metal box. Fluorescent lights manufactured in the last decade do not usually require a starter but instead use an electronic ballast.
Do I need a fluorescent light starter for all fluorescent light bulbs?
In general, older fluorescent lighting requires a starter while most newer models don't. Check the manufacturer's instructions on more information on what your lighting requires.
How often should I replace my fluorescent light starters?
There aren't any specific guidelines as to when you should replace fluorescent light starters but it's useful to check every couple of years to ensure they are functioning properly. Any flickering or dimming is a tell-tale sign that the starter is not operating at its best and may need replacing.
Do LED tubes need starters?
LED tubes do not require a starter, unlike a traditional fluorescent lamp. An LED tube is supplied without LED starters and instead typically comes with integrated drivers that control the amount of electricity flowing through the lamp.
