FAQs

How do air coolers work?

Air coolers, which are also known as evaporative coolers, work by providing effective cooling to rooms by evaporating water. They pull in warm air from the room and pass it through a wet pad or filter. As the air flows over the water, particles which are on the water's surface are carried away.

Heat is taken with these particles and this allows the air to cool. In most cases, the cooler releases a fine mist into the air, which is then whipped out by a fan. Some air coolers may cool the air using a different method.

How effective are air coolers?

Quality air coolers can be very effective. In some cases, they can be regarded as more effective than fans. It is estimated that air coolers use around 70-80W of power, which means that you could run them for around 1p per hour.

Is an air cooler the same as an air conditioning unit?

Both are used to cool air in the room, but unlike air conditioners, air coolers use the process of evaporation to cool the air. However, an air conditioner uses a refrigeration cycle to cool the air. It extracts heat from the air and transfers it outside, cooling the room in the process. Air coolers are more energy-efficient compared to air conditioning units while air conditioners can also help to control humidity levels.

How can I control the temperature of my air cooler?

Many air coolers allow you to add ice packs or ice cubes to help lower the temperature of the air being circulated. Turning the device off periodically can also help to reduce any humidity produced by the cooler, thus controlling the temperature more effectively.

It's recommended to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for optimal usage and temperature control of your specific air cooler model.

What do I need to consider when purchasing an air cooler?

The following factors are important to consider in order to find the right air cooler to suit your needs:

Cooling capacity

A larger room will typically require an air cooler with a greater cooling capacity to cool a space quickly and effectively

Portable

Consider whether you need a portable air cooler that you can easily move around, or if a fixed unit would be more suitable for your needs.

Special features

Some air coolers come equipped with features such as timer settings, remote control settings and adjustable fan speeds. A smart air cooler may offer smartphone control options, voice control and energy usage reports.
