FAQs

What does GU10 mean?

Gu10 is a common type of light fitting used for push and twist spotlight-style lights. 'GU' stands for 'general use', while '10' refers to the number of mm between the two pins of the fitting. They are popular in workspaces such as kitchens or offices where bright, directional light is needed.

What are the different types of GU10 downlights?

Standard or adjustable

The most common type of GU10 downlights are referred to as fixed twist and lock and includes a fixed direction of light due to the placement of the lamp. However, adjustable GU10 downlights allow for tilting of the lamp to direct the beam angle to where it is needed most.

Fire-rated or non fire-rated

Fire-rated downlights are required for recessed/semi-recessed downlighting as these tend to compromise the fire resistance of ceilings.

Standard (non fire-rated) are open instead of being enclosed; they therefore do not tend to affect the ceiling’s fire protection to the same extent as fire-rated downlights.

IP rated

IP stands for 'Ingress Protection' and measures how resistant lighting a device is in different environments. GU10 downlights are commonly available in these different ratings. For instance, IP20 is a standard rating that means the downlight is touch-proof but not waterproof. Ratings of IP65 are better suited to environments such as bathrooms or industrial environments, providing protection against light water pressure and the highest level of dust protection.

Integrated

Integrated downlights are supplied with a fixed lamp. For instance, integrated LED downlights and typically offer a longer lifespan than a normal LED downlight.

What are the benefits of using GU10 downlights?

GU10 downlights can be adjusted to direct light where it is needed the most, such as a workspace. They are available in different IP ratings including IP65, which ensures a level of water-tightness and dust-resistance, making them ideal for moist environments such as bathrooms. They are also available in a range of different finishes to suit a variety of different decor styles, such as polished chrome, satin chrome and white.

Are GU10 downlights energy efficient?

Many GU10 downlights are compatible with LED lamps. LEDs are highly energy-efficient as they provide a bright, long-lasting light with minimal energy output. By replacing existing downlights, your home or business can save money on energy bills, while also looking after the environment.

How do I maintain GU10 downlights?

Regular maintenance can go a long way in getting the most out of your GU10 downlights. Simply wipe down with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dust or debris, and check periodically for loose connections or wires that could cause flickering or intermittent light.
