FAQs

How do fire rated downlights work?

When downlights are installed, holes are placed within ceilings - and this can compromise fire resistance. However, fire rated downlights are designed to restore fire resistance within properties and decrease the amount of time it takes for a fire to spread by featuring an intumescent material which is usually found within the housing or surrounding lamp holder.

The material expands when exposed to high temperatures, effectively sealing off the opening and creating a barrier against fire and smoke by restoring the fire integrity of the ceiling.

This helps minimise the devastating effects fire can have and allows additional time for safe evacuation of the premises.

Are different styles of fire rated downlights available?

Yes, we supply fire rated downlights in a range of different styles to suit different décors. Our collection includes downlight styles such as matt white, satin chrome and satin nickel.

We also offer dimmable fire rated downlights with colour selectors to help you add your own personal style to your lighting. We also stock recessed mounts for recessed downlights, as well as different sizes and dimmable options.

What is the difference between integrated and non-integrated downlights?

Integrated downlights come with a fixed light source (usually an LED module) which forms part of a single unit, providing a minimalist look. These integrated LED downlights often have a long lifespan since the light source is not replaceable.

However, non-integrated downlights require a separate light source that can be replaced independently. This offers more options for customisation although the overall design is less sleek than integrated downlights.

What is the difference between fixed downlights and adjustable downlights?

Adjustable fire-rated downlights allow for adjustment of the light beam angle and provide versatility when lighting specific areas of objects. Fixed downlights are set in place and provide a consistent beam of light that is directed downwards.

What is the difference between standard downlights and fire rated downlights?

Fire rated downlights are equipped with additional safety features compared to standard downlights. They are designed using fire-resistant materials and intumescent seals to prevent the passage of fire and smoke.

What does GU10 stand for?

GU10 is a type of light bulb socket or base commonly used for halogen or LED lights.

GU10 bulbs have a twist-and-lock mechanism and are widely used in track lighting, recessed downlights, and other residential and commercial lighting fixtures.

We also stock a range of LED GU10 Lamps featuring different colour temperatures so you can create the perfect ambience for your space.
